Gardening Obsessions

As any gardener will agree, once you start planting it is very hard to stop. If you are a gardener like me, you start spending you dispensable income not on articles of clothing but on seed packets and organic fertilizer. (Wait, how did this happen?! Have I lost my mind?!) But as this blog is trying to point out, I have to learn how to balance ALL of my obsessions…

Worm Composting: not as icky as it seems

Worm composter

Can-O-Worms
This is my latest eco-friendly adventure! We have been going back and forth trying to decide if we were ready to venture into composting. It only makes sense for a gardener to have her own stash of nutrient-filled fertilizer ready and available when needed, right? So we finally settled on the Can-O-Worms composter. We purchased it from a friendly Canadian company called All Things Organic and purchased our red wriggler worms locally (which is worthy of its own post one day).

My New Favorite Plant

I purchased two of these red leaf hibiscus plants from the local farmers market some time in September because I fell in love with the foliage that looks very similar to a Japanese maple. Since then they have more than tripled in size and I have trimmed them about three times! I am harvesting the clippings to use as Christmas gifts and they are doing great. All that is needed is a small transplant pot and any potting soil on hand. They just keep on growing! Once the leaves around the bottom of the stem start to droop, just clip them off and they grow back, usually with a new flower bud. And the flowers, wow, what a show! They unfortunately only last a day, but are well worth the short period of enjoyment. Even if you use this plant just for its beautiful foliage, it will definitely be a show-stopper in your garden.

If anyone wants a clipping, please contact me. I am happy to share my new favorite plant!
